Tottenham captain Son Heung-min could have earned more money in Saudi Arabia as he closes in on a record-breaking transfer.

The South Korea international has spent the past decade in north London after joining Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen for £22million in 2015.

Son announced over the weekend he would be leaving Tottenham this summer as he looks to embark on a new challenge.

Saudi Pro League clubs have shown an interest in signing Son in recent weeks after previously trying to lure him to the Middle East.

However, BBC Sport reported on Monday (4 August) the 33-year-old is expected to join Los Angeles FC for around £20million, surpassing the record-breaking £17million fee Atlanta United paid to sign Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough in February.

It said the final details of the transfer remain in discussion, but Son's move to LAFC is now subject just to the completion of paperwork and a medical.

Son's wages to be revealed after Tottenham exit

This article contains exclusive comment from Stefan Borson, a former financial adviser to Man City

Son registered 11 goals and 12 assists in 46 appearances last season, helping lead Tottenham to their Europa League final success.

The winger is under contract in north London until June 2026, but he now looks set to move to LAFC despite interest from Saudi clubs.

Speaking exclusively to Football InsiderBorson said: “I think the wages in Saudi would be much bigger.

“I suspect the fee probably would be quite similar actually.

“We will know his wages because they publish them if he goes to LA, and I think it's looking likely that that's the deal.

“I suspect there are not many South Koreans who've gone to Saudi Arabia so far, and I think for any player going to LA obviously looks quite attractive.”

Tottenham set sights on Jack Grealish deal

In terms of a potential replacement for Son, former Spurs scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Tottenham have set their sights on signing Jack Grealish

Having now been cast out of Pep Guardiola’s squad, there is no shortage of interest in the England international, but the finances involved are a potential stumbling block.

Grealish is believed to be on in excess of £300,000 a week at the Etihad Stadium, with his deal set to run until 2027.
