Noel Whelan has boldly claimed that West Brom are the best team in the Championship after watching the 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker said his old side were fortunate to concede just the one goal on New Year’s Day, highlighting the Baggies’ physicality as a huge strength of theirs.
Semi Ajayi netted both the opener for West Brom and an own goal for Leeds in Wednesday’s clash, leaving the two clubs level on points at the top of the Championship table.
Despite Marcelo Bielsa’s men going into 2020 on top of the Championship table and remaining there after their visit to the Hawthorns, Whelan insists the Baggies are the better side.
“There’s loads of height and power in their team, we (Leeds) did well just to concede the one goal,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“They’re a powerful side, there’s no doubt about it, I still believe they’re the best side in the league despite the second-half dominance from Leeds.
“I don’t look too far away from West Brom and Leeds at the end of the season being automatic favourites.”
West Brom have lost just two games in their 26 Championship games this season, although they have drawn 10 of their matches – the joint highest in the league alongside Millwall and Cardiff.
Their next two games see them take on Charlton away from home, with a visit to The Valley in both the FA Cup and the league.
In other West Brom news, Darren Bent has urged Slaven Bilic to axe on of his mainstays for the club’s promotion push.
