Why Giroud must must start for Arsenal against Stoke

COMMENT By Emma Sanders

Olivier Giroud should start for Arsenal against Stoke because his aerial threat will be needed against a rigid defence.

The Frenchman’s height and aerial presence will be a great asset for Arsenal so they should not leave him on the bench, but they can’t afford to drop Alexis Sanchez either.

The Chilean has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season so dropping him is out of the question but he can play in a wide attacking role, allowing Giroud to start at centre-forward.

It would mean both players would cause Stoke’s defence very different problems and the Potters may struggle to deal with the varying threats.

Sanchez likes to run in behind the defence and can cause problems in one-on-one situations so Stoke’s defence will be reluctant to push up too high, allowing too much space.

However, if Giroud starts and they are too deep, he can be an aerial threat in the box and Arsenal have the players to deliver the perfect balls into the area which will produce opportunities.

Both forwards have great goal-scoring records this season, despite Giroud getting very little game time and this is the perfect game to play the duo together given Stoke’s defensive nature.

In other Arsenal news, Mario Balotelli has revealed he would want to play for the Gunners.
