Efe Ambrose has played his final game for Celtic after slipping down the defender pecking order, according to a report.

Ambrose, 28, has made only two appearances for the Scottish giant this season and has not been named in the matchday squad since their Champions League qualification campaign in July.

The Scottish Sun claim the centre-back is “now caught between the rock and the hard place of finding a new club”.

The Nigeria international, who has accumulated 48 caps for his country, has been frozen out by manager Brendan Rodgers after failing to secure a move in the summer transfer window.

His penultimate match in a Hoops shirt was the infamous 1-0 defeat to amateurs Lincoln Red Imps from Gibraltor in late July.

That could prove to be the ignominious end to Ambrose’s time at Celtic, where he has played 169 matches since joining from FC Ashdod in 2012.

In total, Ambrose has had just 180 minutes of first-team action this season but he is out of contract next summer and could leave Parkhead during the January transfer window.

In other Celtic transfer news, the club have agreed the terms of a January deal for a goal machine.
