Analysis: The best three summer PL signings and why Liverpool star tops the pile

By Emma Sanders

Football Insider delivers its countdown of the top three summer signings in the Premier League this season.

3rd – Joe Allen (Stoke)

Stoke snapped up Allen for just £13 million from Liverpool in the summer and he has been outstanding for the Staffordshire outfit. The Welshman has started 11 of their Premier League games and, deployed in a new attacking midfield role, he has already scored four goals. Allen was a bit-part player at Liverpool but he has firmly cemented himself as one of Stoke’s most important players despite only being at the club for just over four months.

2nd – N’Golo Kante (Chelsea)

The 25-year-old was one of Leicester’s outstanding performers last season as they went on to win the Premier League title and he was easily Chelsea’s best signing in the summer. Kante has been excellent for the Blues and has developed a formidable partnership with Nemanja Matic in midfield. He blocks, tackles and intercepts everything and has a great understanding of the game which allows him to provide the perfect protection for Chelsea’s back three. For £30million, he has certainly proven his worth.

1st – Sadio Mane (Liverpool)

The Liverpool forward has been the best signing in the Premier League after making an immediate impact since joining from Southampton for around £34million. The jet-heeled wide forward has transformed the front line with his pace, mobility and eye for goal. Mane has already notched up six goals and two assists in his first 12 league appearances and, according to football statistics site Squawka, has created 17 chances for the Reds. He was voted the club’s Player of the Month in August after scoring a superb goal on his debut against Arsenal. Edges out Kante because he has been so effective in the opposition third of the pitch.

In other Liverpool news, Bayern Munich are set to try and lure this senior figure away from the club in January.
