Three reasons why Liverpool should sign 31-year-old PL ace to solve problem area
COMMENT By Will Butcher
Jurgen Klopp must solve his Liverpool left-back woes in the summer and would be well advised to sign Manchester City star Gael Clichy.
Clichy, 31, has struggled to feature regularly for Pep Guardiola’s City this season, with Aleksander Kolarov and Fernandinho being chosen over him on the left side of defence.
With Klopp likely to add a left-back in the summer to his Liverpool ranks, here are three reasons why Clichy would be the perfect signature for the Merseyside giants.
Contract ends in summer
Clichy is likely to be available on a free in the summer with his contract set to expire at the end of June, with City unlikely to offer the Frenchman a new deal before the end of the season. The former Arsenal star would save Liverpool a chunk of money that manager Klopp would be able to use elsewhere in the summer, as he looks to bolster his side in an attempt to launch a Premier League title challenge in 2017-18. With Clichy still offering top-tier quality at left-back, the France international would prove a very shrewd signing.

Current left-back options
England international James Milner has been played at left-back throughout the season, following the woeful performances of Spaniard Alberto Moreno. Although plying his trade well, former Man City and Leeds ace Milner is not a natural left-back and that has shown on occasion throughout the season. His lack of pace on the flank has seen him struggle to stop a right winger from getting to the byline or cutting inside, which Riyad Mahrez proved during Leicester’s 3-1 win on Monday. Similarly, Moreno’s tendency to lose his discipline has seen him fail to provide the required quality. Clichy would finally end Liverpool’s problem area as he would offer consistency at the back.
Premier League experience
A three-time Premier League winner, Clichy knows what it takes to hold aloft the coveted domestic trophy. Liverpool have failed to win the top tier of English football since 1990, and are crying out for a secret weapon in order to end their 27-year wait. Bringing Clichy to Anfield could be the perfect signing in that regard, with City’s number 22 clocking up a huge 314 Premier League appearances during his time with Man City and Arsenal. Offering a solidity at the back, Clichy has proved that he offers top-flight quality going forward too, with 20 assists and three goals in his career.
