Defender will struggle to keep his place: Three things we learned from Leeds win over Derby
By Emma Sanders
Football Insider analyses three talking points from Leeds 1-0 victory against Derby in the Championship at Elland Road on Friday evening.
Leeds are dangerous on set-pieces
Kyle Bartley could have grabbed a hat-trick in the first 20 minutes if he’d netted all of his chances from corners and Leeds had plenty of them. Chris Wood eventually scored the opener with a lovely header from another perfectly-placed corner kick and Leeds continued to threaten Derby’s goal with crosses into the box. Derby’s marking wasn’t great but the movement of the Leeds players was excellent. Pablo Hernandez’ delivery is absolutely exquisite.
Chris Wood is in the form of his life
The Leeds striker has been prolific this season and he took his tally to 14 goals in 25 league appearances when he netted the opener in the first half. It was his third goal in just two games too and Wood doesn’t look like stopping any time soon. He caused problems for Derby’s defence all evening and was yet again the player to put away his chance after Bartley had missed several opportunities to head his side into the lead.

The centre-back was excellent against Derby and he would probably start in most teams in the Championship but he faces a battle for a place with Kyle Bartley and Pontus Jansson and he won’t win. The Leeds defensive duo are two of the side’s most important players and though Ayling has performed very well in Jansson’s absence, he will struggle to retain his place when the Swedish international returns.
In other Leeds news, Lewie Coyle has revealed he is ready to fight for a place.
