Tony Cascarino: Tottenham must join race to sign PL 25-year-old
By Will Butcher
Tony Cascarino believes Tottenham must enter the race to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window.
The Daily Mail claims Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Everton are all interested in the 25-year-old star, who has shone at the back for Claude Puel’s Saints this season.
Ex-Chelsea star Cascarino believes Tottenham need one or two top quality signings and if the big clubs are after van Dijk, then Spurs should be too.
Cascarino claimed Mauricio Pochettino is not far away from forming a side that can win trophies, and needs defensive reinforcements if they are to play three at the back.
“If Tottenham Hotspur are to achieve the success they deserve they have to make some big-name signings,” Cascarino told The Times.

“They are a young and talented side but need one or two star additions if they are going to win trophies.
“They need some reinforcements in central defence, particularly if they are going to play three at the back. If the big teams are chasing the Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, then Spurs must be too.”
Spurs currently have Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer as their options at the heart of the defence, while Eric Dier can fill in from midfield and youngster Cameron Carter-Vickers is also beginning to impress.
Spurs could still look to sign 12-time Holland international van Dijk in the summer, but will face plenty of competition for the former Celtic defender’s signature.
Southampton’s number 17 has more than five years remaining on his contract with the Saints, after helping his side keep 12 clean sheets during his 30 league and cup appearances this term.
Football Insider verdict:
Concerns over the performances of Wimmer and Pochettino’s preference to keep Dier in midfield is likely to see the Argentinian boss bolster his defensive ranks in the summer, as he looks to give his squad the necessary talent to mount another title challenge in the 2017-18 season. Bringing in van Dijk will not only boost the north London giants because of his quality at the back, but it will also see Spurs’ title rivals miss out. There’s every chance van Dijk is going to be one of the marquee signings of the summer, and if Spurs bag him it would also be a huge statement of intent as they look to continue the Poch revolution.
