Tony Xia identifies problem as Aston Villa continue to concede late on

By Will Butcher

Aston Villa chairman Tony Xia has revealed that his new side’s tendency to concede late on is not down to the mentality of his players.

The Championship giants have lost points to goals after the 85th minute on four occasions this season, which has seen them lose to Sheffield Wednesday, and draw against Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield and Brentford.

Villa’s new Twitter-friendly owner has claimed on his personal Twitter account that he and other senior members at the club have identified the problem, as he dismissed that the “confident” and “positive” players have a mentality problem.

Villa fans are becoming increasingly frustrated with their side’s inability to hold onto a lead, after John Egan scored an 88th-minute goal to snatch a point from under the noses of Roberto Di Matteo’s side.

If Villa had held onto their results, it would have seen the Midlands outfit pocked another seven points as well as occupying a play-off position.

However, Di Matteo’s side are currently languishing above the Championship drop zone in 17th place with just seven points from as many games.

Villa have recorded just one win all season despite spending almost £60million on new talent this summer, with a 3-0 win against Rotherham.

Former Champions League winning manager Di Matteo takes his side to East Anglia to face Ipswich Town on Saturday as Di Matteo’s new-look side aim to propel themselves up the Championship table.
