Aston Villa owner Tony Xia has dismissed reported interest in Wolves ace Danny Batth as a “rumour”.

The Daily Mail claimed on Saturday that the Midlands giants were keeping close tabs on the 26-year-old centre-back alongside Championship rivals Hull and Sheffield Wednesday.

It was a link which caused some worry among the Villa fan base with many believing the Wolves captain to not be good enough for their side, which currently boasts John Terry, James Chester, Christopher Samba and Tommy Elphick in the centre-back ranks.

One supporter went as far as to tell Xia on his personal Twitter account not to go anywhere near him and the Chinese businessman responded by saying the reported Aston Villa interest was a rumour.

Alongside bringing in both Samba and Terry this summer Aston Villa let youth graduate centre-back Nathan Baker leave for league rivals Bristol City on Friday, which Xia had to assure fans to trust his decision after some had questioned it.

It is likely the Baker decision will be viewed as even more bizarre if the Midlands giants then replace him with Batth, whose future is currently in doubt at Wolves following the signings of centre-back trio Roderick Miranda, Ryan Bennett and Willy Boly.
