There is no truth in reports that Newcastle United are in pursuit of former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, according to a top journalist.
Spanish reporter Guillem Balague, who works as a regular pundit for the likes of Sky Sports and talkSPORT, reported on his personal Twitter account that contrary to recent reports, there is nothing happening over a potential move.

The Daily Mirror had claimed that the Spanish striker’s representatives had been in touch with the Magpies over a potential move but Balague’s definitive update on the matter appears to have poured water over what would have been a shock move.
The veteran forward, who netted 85 goals in the Premier League during stints with Liverpool and Chelsea, is set to be out of contract with current side Atletico Madrid in the summer, and a move to St James’ Park would reunite him with Rafael Benitez, who was his manager with both the Reds and the Blues.
Football Insider verdict
Balague’s update will come as no surprise to even the biggest dreamers of Newcastle fans, with Torres simply not fitting the bill for what the Magpies look for in their transfer targets. His red hot form at Liverpool was replaced by a barren spell at Chelsea, and at 33-years-old, he has little-to-no resale value. There will be huge doubts over whether he still has what it takes, plus his wage demands are likely to be well out of Newcastle’s budget. It was always going to be doubtful the rumours ever amounted to anything, and this report seems to have put an end to any hope that Torres would be turning out in black and white at St James’ Park.
