Atletico Madrid have agreed to sign Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon after a breakthrough in talks, sources have told Football Insider.

The Spanish giants leapfrogged into pole position to land the left-back, 25, on Saturday morning and closed the deal later in the day.

Reguilon is booked for a medical and will join on a season-long loan, and there will be no buy option included in the deal.

Tottenham

The defender has been frozen out at Spurs at the start of the season after Antonio Conte signed Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan earlier in the summer.

Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon have emerged as the first choice left sided wing-backs in Conte's 3-5-2 set-up, with the former starting last weekend's 1-0 win over Wolves.

Reguilon has been the subject of interest from multiple clubs in recent weeks, including Sevilla and Valencia in Spain, as well as Nice in France and Fulham in the Premier League.

But the lure of established Champions League outfit Atletico has proved the most persuasive for the six-times Spain international.

The 2020 signing from Real Madrid was one of four senior players - along with Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Winks - left out of the club's pre-season tour of South Korea.

The unwanted four all remained at the club’s Hotspur Way training base after the rest of the squad jetted out to Asia.

Reguilon had been a regular starter at Tottenham during his two seasons at the club following his £27million transfer from Real Madrid.

The six-times Spain international has made 67 appearances in total, which included 22 Premier League starts in 2021-22.

He missed the final five matches of last season with a groin injury.
