Tottenham backed to complete signing of player 'just like Lingard' from giants - pundit
Noel Whelan has suggested Tottenham could replace Harry Kane with Manchester United forward Anthony Martial next summer.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Frenchman, 25, could follow in Jesse Lingard’s footsteps after the playmaker’s loan at West Ham.
The Express reported last Thursday (September 23rd) that Tottenham are interesting in signing Martial, with a swap deal involving Tanguy Ndombele mooted.
According to the report, Manchester United have slapped a price tag of £40million on the France international.
Martial has made just one Premier League start this season after falling down the Old Trafford pecking order since the summer arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Whelan suggested the potential move could “reignite” the forward’s career, adding that he “desperately needs a fresh start”.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Look at Lingard going to West Ham last year.
“That’s an example of how these sorts of signings can work.
“He’s still young enough, but he’s a player who desperately needs a fresh start.
“Just like Lingard, he needs to get away from Man United to reignite his career and show people what he’s all about regularly.
“Sometimes you need that new lease of life, and at the moment there’s no benefit to him staying at Manchester United.
“If United are to offload him, he could very well be the replacement that Spurs want if Harry Kane moves on.”
Martial netted just seven goals in 36 matches across all competitions last season.
The striker has notched 78 goals in 264 games for the Red Devils following his big-money arrival from AS Monaco in 2015.
