Paul Robinson has urged Tottenham to re-sign Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one lauded the "terrific" 30-year-old and admitted to being "surprised" when he left the club in 2019.

The Athletic's David Ornstein reports the right-back wants to return to England at the end of the season with Manchester United interested in acquiring his services.

Trippier has gone from strength to strength in Madrid over the past two seasons and is now one game away from winning the La Liga title.

When asked by Football Insider's Dylan Childs if Spurs should consider re-signing Trippier in light of Aurier's prospective exit, Robinson said: "I would take him back, 100 per cent.

"I was surprised when they sold him in the first place. They sold Kyle Walker one year and then a short while later sold Tripper as well. It didn't make any sense, both sales surprised me.

"Tripper is a terrific player who can play left-back as well. His crossing and set-piece delivery is a big asset.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy

"I don't know under what circumstances he left and how things were between him and Daniel Levy because maybe it isn't an option for him to come back.

"If the door is open to re-sign him it is definitely one the club should look at."
