Paul Robinson fears Tottenham is becoming a "breeding ground" for players who have failed at "the top, top level".

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one named Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero, Emerson Royal and Sergio Reguilon as examples of such.

Bentancur, Kulusevski and Romero all spent time at Juventus prior to joining Spurs.

Emerson and Reguilon came from Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

According to Sunday Mirror (13 February p.73), Real Madrid are considering exercising their buy-back clause to re-sign Reguilon in the summer.

When asked by Football Insider's Dylan Childs for his assessment of Reguilon's Spurs future, Robinson said: “It’s worrying time for Reguilon.

"He was seen as the solution to the left-wing back position but now he can’t get in the team. He’s fallen right down the pecking order.

"I worry that Spurs has become a place for failed players at top, top clubs. When you look at Bentancur, Kulusevski, Romero, Emerson Royal, Reguilon… They have failed at the top clubs and then come to Spurs.

"I worry that Spurs cannot compete with the top clubs to get the best players.

"Reguilon is a player I like but he is not performing at the moment. Spurs are getting players who have ultimately failed at the top, top level.

"Spurs is becoming a breeding ground for such players. The trend needs to change quickly.”
