Tottenham long-term target stalls on contract talks, 50-50 to leave club - reports

Tottenham’s long-term pursuit of Schalke’s Max Meyer looks to have heated up after the player admitted that his talks for a new contract have stalled and that he is 50-50 to leave, according to a report.

The Sun reported in December that Mauricio Pochettino was still interested in the 21-year-old after failing to sign him last summer.

The Bundesliga wonderkid’s contract with Schalke runs out at the end of next season and he is toying with the idea of moving away from the German club when the current campaign comes to its conclusion.

Meyer was quoted by the Sun as saying that “there have been no further talks” about his contract situation at the Veltins Arena.

When he asked if he wants to sign a new deal, he replied: “Why not? I can imagine both. The odds are 50-50.”

Liverpool are also keen admirers of the four-time German international but Tottenham’s better chances of Champions League football next season could prove to be the difference.

Meyer isn’t the only promising German talent to be linked with a move away from Schalke as Calcio Mercato reports that Leon Goetzka is also on the shortlists of both Tottenham and Arsenal as his contract with the club is also nearing its end.

The Gelsenkirchen-club appears to be tearing apart at the seams after their dismal showing in the Bundlesliga this season, which will likely see them miss out on European football.

Sead Kolasinac is also linked with a move from the club, with Juventus and Chelsea both interested in him.

Football Insider Verdict

Tottenham have been long-term admirers of Meyer and it looks like the stars might be aligning for a summer move to the Premier League. It’s an exciting time to be a Tottenham fan. Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli have played brilliantly for Spurs this season and the added strength in depth come next season could lift the team to even greater heights. Pochettino’s pursuit of Ross Barkley hasn’t cooled down either and the Everton midfielder is perhaps a better, albeit more expensive, option than Meyer. The Germany Under-21 captain is out of form this season but he is still young and is a prodigious talent.
