Football Insider verdict:
Pochettino has been keen to secure the long-trek futures of several first-team players in the last 12 months, the imminent agreement of Alderweireld could be the most important. The 27-year-old is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League and has been a colossal signing since he arrived from Atletico Madrid. The centre-back impressed in English football during a brief spell with football, before becoming one of the most well-rounded defenders in the country. He is a leader at the back and Spurs always seem to play better when he features. They obviously are delighted to secure the futures of attacking talents Harry Kane and Dele Alli for example. However, Spurs’ success is built on a solid defence and Alderweireld is at the heart of that.
