Sky: Tottenham deliver emphatic answer in reported £40m PL enforcer deal

By Danny Wright

Tottenham will not sell Eric Dier despite Manchester United seeking a £40million deal for the England international, according to a report.

Sky Sports claims that Spurs will rebuff any approach made for the highly-rated Premier League enforcer after a previous report in the Telegraph said United wanted to make him a part of their squad.

Dier, 23, is understood to want to play in a midfield role in the future and is concerned that this is looking unclear under manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has utilised him in defence this season.

The former Sporting Lisbon youngster has become an important part of the Tottenham first team since his £4million switch to White Hart Lane in 2014.

He’s made 41 appearances across all competitions for Pochettino’s side this season, scoring two goals in the process.

Dier has spent most of the season playing as a centre-back but in the last three matches he has been used as a midfielder in the absence of Victor Wanyama.

The Kenyan international has been sidelined through injury in recent weeks but made his return off the bench during the 4-0 win against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Football Insider verdict:

Even though Dier isn’t the most important player in Pochettino’s team, it’s still vital for the squad to remain together in the summer. Spurs cannot afford to let go of any of their first-team players, and the 23-year-old has been a consistent performer in the squad for the past few seasons now. Pochettino is expected to lift the club to the next level in the summer and it is key for him to keep together the strong platform he has built his squad on. There’s not a lot of improvement you can make to this current Spurs XI and it’s good that Dier will not be turning out for one of their league rivals next season.
