Tottenham could pull off 'one of the biggest signings ever' as Rudiger offer lined up - pundit

Tottenham could pull off one of the “biggest signings ever” by poaching Antonio Rudiger from Chelsea, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Spurs would have to beat an “abundance” of clubs to the 28-year-old’s capture.

As reported by Eurosport on Tuesday (7 December), Spurs are putting forward a strong proposal to tempt Rudiger to north London on a free transfer next summer.

The Germany international is out of contract and has reportedly made his mind up to leave Stamford Bridge.

Whelan insisted Conte’s appointment at Tottenham could “entice” top players to sign for Spurs.

However, he admitted Rudiger’s capture would represent a massive coup for the Lilywhites.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “There’s no doubt that a big-name manager will entice players of international quality.

“But you’ve got to ask the question why would you leave Chelsea to go to Tottenham? You’ve got more chance of winning trophies with Chelsea in my opinion.

“That would be a bold move. It would be one of the biggest signings ever if he did decide to go to Tottenham, knowing the fact that you may not win anything.

“He’s going to have an abundance of offers from overseas clubs and top clubs where he will be in the Champions League.

“I think that’s very important to players with his quality and stature. That you’re guaranteed that Champions League competition every single year.

“If he went to Tottenham, without being disrespectful, I would find that a step back from Chelsea right now.”

Rudiger has been a mainstay for Chelsea this season, making 20 appearances.

He played 45 times under Antonio Conte during the Italian manager’s spell at Stamford Bridge.
