Danny Mills has suggested that Toby Alderweireld may remain stuck on the Tottenham bench for the rest of the season.
The former Manchester City and Leeds United defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed Jose Mourinho has settled on a centre-half pairing of Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier.
Mourinho named an unchanged back-four as Spurs swept aside West Ham 2-0 on Tuesday night – Serge Aurier, Sanchez, Dier and Ben Davies retaining their places in defence.
The Lilywhites’ Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld watched on from the bench as Spurs kept their first clean sheet since 2 February, 10 games ago.
Mills was adamant that the former Manchester United and Chelsea boss would stick with the Sanchez and Dier for the remainder of the season.
“It is difficult because there are players with question marks over some players,” he told Football Insider.
“They have signed short term deals but are they committed?
“Mourinho knows what he is going to get from Sanchez, who has pace, and Dier, who has experience.
“He is a great coach defensively and he will drill them and build that partnership.
“Unless something goes hideously wrong then I fully expect those two to be the preferred centre-back partnership.”
Vertonghen’s future appears destined away from the club despite the fact he signed a short-term deal earlier this month.
Aldeweireld, 31, signed a new long-term contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2023.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club have been given big hope of signing 26-year-old desperate to join them.
