Tottenham expert gushes over Dane Scarlett - 'we're going to see something special'

Tottenham starlet Dane Scarlett could score 25 goals for Portsmouth this season.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Scarlett, 18, scored his first ever senior goal in Portsmouth’s 1-0 away win at Port Vale on 27 August.

He followed that up with a second goal in the EFL Trophy on 30 August as Pompey lost to Crawley on penalties before bagging a brace against Peterborough on Saturday (3 September).

Wenham has been blown away by Scarlett so far.

“It’s not just that he got a brace, it’s that he now seems to be leading the line for Portsmouth,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He went there as one of five strikers towards the end of the window but he seems to have established himself as the first choice now.

“So you have an 18-year-old boy leading the line for a big club like Portsmouth, who are a big team in that league, they will expect to go up.

“The fans love him already and he seems to be thriving off the confidence of that. This is looking really, really good and really promising.

“That’s four goals in his last three games, if he can go on a run now, which I heavily back him to do, we are going to see something special.

“He got get 25 goals. It could be like Defoe’s loan at Bournemouth, it could really set him on his way. I am a big fan of continuity.

“If he keeps scoring goals for Portsmouth and they do go up, I would 100% keep him on loan there in the Championship next season.

“He has a contract at Tottenham, let him develop, People wrongly demand that he come back if he is scoring loads of goals.

“He is very, very young. We are in no rush. Let’s have him develop and we will have a serious player on our hands.”

On 25 May, Tottenham announced Scarlett had signed a new long-term deal.

The forward made seven first-team appearances for Spurs during the recently completed season, most recently as a second-half substitute in the 4-0 win over Leeds United on 26 February.
