Tottenham fans handed worrying update on senior injury blow as star delivers inside verdict

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen says the injury blow suffered by star striker Harry Kane prior to the international break should not keep him out of the World Cup, but that there are doubts he will return any time soon.

The 24-year-old was forced to hobble off the pitch after a clash with Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and there were serious concerns he had suffered a repeat ankle injury of the blow which had kept him out for nearly two months.

Having missed out on featuring for the Three Lions over the last week, Vertonghen’s inside verdict will have the club’s supporters worrying about the length of his absence, with the Belgian hoping he will return before the end of the campaign.

He told reporters, as quoted by ESPN: “I don’t think [the injury] is serious enough for him to miss the World Cup.

“I hope he’ll return before the end of the season and then he has time for the national team.”

Kane has scored 35 goals in 39 appearances this season, and if fit enough will face Vertonghen and his Belgium team mates at the World Cup this summer.

Football Insider verdict

For someone who is likely close to Kane and will be kept in the loop about his fitness, Vertonghen’s verdict will not be filling fans with much hope. The early signs might have looked worrying but there was a confidence he would be back sooner rather than later, although they may well have been dashed by the defender’s comments. Having him absent for any period of time will be a huge blow, but an elongated time on the sidelines would be devastating to their chances of securing any sort of silverware, with the FA Cup in their sights, as well as nailing down a top four finish come the end of the season.
