Marcus Edwards made his Tottenham debut on Wednesday night - and fans took to Twitter to commend his display.

The 17-year-old playmaker was handed his first competitive appearance against Gillingham in the EFL Cup as Mauricio Pochettino's side won 5-0 to secure a smooth passage to the last-16 of the competition.

Pochettino made 11 changes from the team that won 1-0 in the Premier League against Sunderland on Sunday, and used the match against League One opposition to hand Edwards his senior bow as a 75th minute substitute for Vincent Janssen.

The Spurs manager had hailed Edwards' immense potential in the build-up to the EFL Cup clash and even compared the teenager to all-time great Lionel Messi.

Supporters were delighted that Pochettino had given some game times to the teenager, who has made huge strides in recent months.

Fans praised his poise on the ball and were impressed by how he carried the ball forward.
