Forget Wimmer: Tottenham fans urge Pochettino to replace Vertonghen with this £20m-rated ace
By Harry Sykes
Tottenham fans have urged Mauricio Pochettino to replace the injured Jan Vertonghen with Ben Davies in the coming weeks.
Pochettino admitted on Saturday that the ankle problem the Belgium international sustained in the 4-0 demolition of West Brom “looks bad” and he could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The loss of Vertonghen for an extended period is a major blow as he has been an integral member of the Premier League’s meanest defence in the last two seasons.
The centre-back has also looked extremely comfortable in the new 3-5-2 formation used by Pochettino in recent weeks, alongside Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld.
Tottenham fans want Pochettino to stick with the system of three centre-backs that has paid rich dividends in recent matches, most notably in the impressive victories over Chelsea, Watford and West Brom.

Kevin Wimmer is a natural centre-back and might appear the more obvious replacement but Spurs followers believe left-back Davies, who the Sun claim is a £20million target for Manchester City, would be a better choice after the form he showed in that position for Wales at Euro 2016.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Hoping Vertonghen injury isn’t too bad but the left of that back 3 should suit Davies pretty well #COYS

Case for Davies being his top class performances for Wales there, Wimmer deputised for Vertonghen in the past, or experience for CCV? #COYS

Davies best option to replace one of starting eleven. #coys

Will definitely miss Vertonghen but jus think about Ben Davies superb performances operating in back 3 for Wales during Euro + Wimmer. #COYS

Imperious today. Given tapestry of PL, I’d seriously consider binning the Europa. Shame about Jan but it’s a role that suits Davies #coys

Vertonghen will not be an easy player to replace as he has been in the team from the start for 20 of Spurs’ 21 league matches this season.
Tottenham, who climbed to second after Saturday’s triumph, have conceded just 14 Premier League goals, the best record in the top flight.
