Andros Townsend has told Tottenham fans that he will have to “dent” their Premier title hopes when they take on Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.
The 25-year-old winger came through the ranks at White Hart Lane and he will come up against his former club in a crucial league match at Selhurst Park.
Since Sam Allardyce joined Palace in December, Townsend’s form has changed as he has played a pivotal part in their transformation from relegation strugglers to possible top ten contenders.
They have beaten the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks as they will be looking to add Spurs to their list.
Tottenham fans will not like these comments from Townsend, who clearly has to remain professional when both teams meet on Wednesday.
“I hope they win every other game and push Chelsea as close as they can,” Townsend told Sky Sports News HQ on Wednesday morning. “But, like I said on Wednesday night, unfortunately, I am going to have to dent their title hopes.”
Mauricio Pochettino’s team are now seven points behind leaders Chelsea after they beat Southampton 4-2 on Tuesday night.
During his time in north London, Townsend made 93 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals added with his 15 assists.
The England international moved to Newcastle in 2016 but left the club months later after their relegation to the Championship.
He made a big money move to Palace in the summer where he initially struggled for form and consistency under former boss Alan Pardew.
Two goals and three assists in his last seven league games has changed that and helped his team move away from the bottom three.
