Cody Gakpo 'leading contender' for Tottenham as '£100m' Liverpool deal accelerates

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo a top target this summer.

The 27-year-old could leave the Reds amid the arrival of Victor Munoz and potential arrival of Bradley Barcola.

Talks are said to be underway for the PSG winger, with a potential deal expected to cost well over £100million.

Gakpo is under contract at Liverpool until 2030 having extended his deal last summer, and will prompt a significant outlay for Tottenham.

£237m worth of new players have arrived this summer already, with a move for Manchester City winger Savinho also expected to go through.

Tottenham are also expected to pursue a new striker, as they attempt a complete rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi.

Cody Gakpo's ruthless record vs Tottenham

Gakpo has often split opinion at Liverpool. Joining from PSV in 2023, the winger was already displaying encouraging signs in his first campaign.

The following two seasons would see him explode, scoring 16 goals in 2023-24 before netting 18 and providing six assists in 2024-25.

But last season, the Netherlands international began to frustrate the Liverpool fans, often found wanting in front of goal and struggling for consistency.

That has opened the door to Gakpo's potential exit this summer, although the Reds would likely demand a significant fee as they look to fund their move for Barcola.

Tottenham would not only gain a dangerous forward, but an end to their suffering at his hand. In nine clashes against Liverpool with Gakpo involved, the North London club have won just twice.

The Dutchman has won five of them, scoring four times and assisting twice against potentially his future club.

How would Tottenham line up with Gakpo?

In pre-season so far, De Zerbi's Tottenham have been lining up in a four-three-three system, with two wingers and a flat midfield three.

Mathys Tel has filled in on the left, but there is clearly a space for a top quality option in that position.

Mohammed Kudus is expected to take up the position on the right, and if Gakpo does arrive, he can be expected to slot into that left-sided role.

Former teammate Andy Robertson is an option to play behind him, too, although Destiny Udogie is expected to be the first choice.
