Cristian Romero edges closer to Tottenham exit after 'face-to-face' Jan Paul van Hecke talks
Cristian Romero has long been linked with a Tottenham Hotspur exit, and this summer it could finally become a reality.
Spurs’ captain has been at the centre of multiple controversies throughout the campaign as the club narrowly avoided relegation.
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have recently been linked to the Argentina international, and now, Tottenham are seemingly looking at replacements.
Reportedly that Spurs have submitted mega-money bid for Brighton and Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke, which could result in Romero’s exit.
The 25-year-old helped the Seagulls qualify for the Conference League this season and could make a quick move to North London before the World Cup starts.
Tottenham eye quick Jan Paul van Hecke signing
It is said that Brighton and Tottenham have sat down to have discussions over the potential transfer due to the offer.
The defender has just one year left on his contract, meaning the Seagulls are running out of time to sell their star before he potentially leaves on a free transfer.
VI stated that the Brighton defender is keen on a move to Spurs, which would see him link up with his former manager, Roberto De Zerbi. However, this almost certainly means the end of Romero’s time at the North London club.
Van Hecke will be keen to start every match, and his performances this season prove that he should be one of the main stars at Tottenham if a move goes through.
As a result, given the exit rumours, Spurs’ captain seems the most likely casualty as De Zerbi looks to make room in his starting XI.
Do Tottenham want to sell Romero?
Former Spurs scout Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider that Tottenham will be keen to move Romero on this summer.
Brown believes that the captain has endured too many controversies this season, which has led to this viewpoint.
Romero has also struggled on the pitch, with red cards becoming commonplace, while his performances have also left much to be desired.
De Zerbi is believed to have doubts about the centre-back’s reliability and is prepared to see him move on despite his previously important role.
However, it remains to be seen if anyone actually comes in for Romero after such a difficult campaign.
