Cristian Romero: 'Three clubs would take him tomorrow' reveals ex-Tottenham scout
Cristian Romero is bound for a move abroad after it emerged that he is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
That is according to former senior Tottenham scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
The Lilywhites are set to offload the 28-year-old this summer, with several clubs, including Inter Milan, said to be interested in making a move for him.
Romero has three years remaining on his contract at Tottenham, and transfer chiefs are reportedly looking for a fee in the region of £42.5million.
His future will likely be settled after Sunday's World Cup final, where the defender could become a two-time winner of the legendary trophy.
The Tottenham man has performed exceptionally well for Argentina this summer, displaying form that he has not for a long time in North London.
Bryan King reveals Cristian Romero's likely destination
Romero joined Tottenham in 2022 and his quality was immediately apparent.
The Lilywhites appeared to have pulled off a significant coup, but the years since have not worked out as many suspected they would.
For the most part, Romero's quality was not surrounded by players of a similar calibre, and as Tottenham slipped down the Premier League table, the defender's focus appeared to drift.
Lapses in concentration, which simply never happen for Argentina, began to creep into his game. Romero's potential future at Tottenham likely came to an end when he steamed into a needless challenge and was sent off at Manchester United ahead of key games in the fight against relegation.
"I think he'll go abroad. I think he'll go to Spain. There are three clubs there who would take him tomorrow," King told Football Insider.
"Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. He's a good player. You can't take it that way, he's a good player, but his discipline, there's the problem.
"I think [with] his consistency of being sent off far too much, I don't think he should ever have been captain of that football club."
Romero in Gary Neville spat
Romero featured as Argentina beat England 2-1 in Wednesday's World Cup semi-final.
Before the game, Gary Neville had described the Tottenham defender and Lisandro Martinez as "the best, worst centre-half pairing in the world".
Speaking after Argentina's win, Romero said: "The only thing that I hope for is that when I retire, I am not that stupid. Hopefully I won't criticise a player or anyone.
"Because at the end of the day, we are doing our best for our national team. Sometimes it goes right for us, sometimes badly, but we are just happy to be in a World Cup final again.
"I think we are making history, for us it is something really huge, and we feel the significance of this shirt like no-one else."
