Gary Neville has egg on his face over Mathys Tel but he's right about one Tottenham thing
Gary Neville's criticism of Mathys Tel was frequent during Tottenham's game against Chelsea.
The Sky Sports commentator was constantly on his back, with his performance not living up to what the former Manchester United defender expected.
Tel, 21, would ultimately get the last laugh, scoring an excellent solo goal, where he ran from inside his own half to put Spurs 2-0 up.
However, while Tel's goal will silence any critics for now, Neville's attitude towards the forward is certainly not baseless.
But now the situation could evolve regarding the Frenchman's time in N17.
And he could finally leave the doubters behind once and for all.
Mathys Tel must build on Chelsea breakthrough to prove Gary Neville wrong
Tel has been a frustrating figure to watch at Tottenham this season, with nothing coming off for the forward most of the time.
However, with his goal against Chelsea, he did showcase what was already widely known about him - he has talent.
Consistency, though, is key, and Tel has lacked that in abundance.
In many ways, Tel's goal against Chelsea papered over the cracks, but there were still plenty of positive things to take away.
The French had more touches in the opposition box than anyone else (11), completed the most dribbles (4) and also hit a top speed of 34 kilometres per hour.
Tottenham's goalscorer was weak in his duels though, winning just seven of 16 throughout the game.
And that has unfortunately been a consistent theme throughout this season, with Tel having an average duel success of 33.9 per cent.
So, while the forward may have silenced Neville on this occassion, he needs to make this a frequent pattern, as beforehand, the pundits comments were justifiable.
Tel must start against Crystal Palace after Chelsea confidence boost
With Tel popping up with a goal for Tottenham, the forward simply needs to start against Crystal Palace.
Confidence and momentum are now on Spurs' side, and on a personal note for Tel, he will be brimming with it more than anyone.
His finish against Chelsea was only a glimpse of what he can achieve, and if he can turn that into consistency, Spurs have a top player on their hands.
Tel needs regular minutes to build on his latest contribution, and another start would allow him to show that his goal against Chelsea was not an isolated moment of quality
