Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Paul van Hecke has attracted rave reviews after his display against Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres in the Netherlands' 5-1 win over Sweden at the World Cup on Saturday.

Goals from Brian Brobbey, Cody Gakpo and Crysencio Summerville saw Ronald Koeman's team put one foot into the round of 32, despite a brief glimmer of hope for Sweden when Anthony Elanga scored.

The Netherlands will hope to secure their spot at the top of group F next week when they play Tunisia, who conceded five in their opener.

Tottenham signed Van Hecke from Brighton this week, with the defender joining on a long-term deal after a deal worth £52million was agreed.

The 26-year-old is part of an early overhaul of Roberto De Zerbi's squad this summer, with Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson also arriving on free transfers.

Tottenham are also in negotiations over the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, although they will need to improve on their reported initial £75m bid.

Dutch media hail Jan Paul van Hecke

There had been significant interest in Van Hecke, who enjoyed a superb season for Brighton.

But Tottenham acted quickly and decisively, capitalising on the one year the centre-back had remaining on his contract to quickly agree a fee.

The 26-year-old will join a crop of talented centre-backs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, including Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Senesi.

Both Dutchmen started against Sweden on Saturday, with Van Hecke attracting credit for his performance.

The former Blackburn Rovers defender registered a tackle, a block, six clearances, three recoveries and won four duels.

Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur gave Van Hecke a 6.5 out of 10 for his display, and wrote that it was a "solid" performance.

Sportnieuws were more complimentary, awarding the Tottenham man with a seven out of 10. "He is a top-class player at the back, orchestrated by Van Dijk," they wrote.

Micky van de Ven fails to impress

It was a less impressive night for Van de Ven, who started at left-back for the Netherlands.

The 25-year-old was left in the dust by Elanga in the build-up to the winger's goal, and the defender was left nutmegged and embarrassed when the pair clashed again shortly after.

Sportnieuws wrote that Van de Ven "stood out in a negative way" and had a "tough evening".

In a similar respect, Voetbal Primeur gave him a 5.5 out of 10 and wrote that it was "not the best performance".
