Roberto De Zerbi: Chances of Tottenham sack revealed by top source

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer spending spree should protect Roberto De Zerbi from the sack.

That is according to former Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes the amount Spurs have invested in the manager should give him time to turn results around.

Despite guiding the North London club to survival last season, De Zerbi and Tottenham have been awful so far this Premier League campaign.

Spurs currently reside at the bottom of the division with zero points from their first two matches, having conceded five times and scored zero goals.

However, De Zerbi is unlikely to be under any immediate pressure given how much the club have spent to form a squad to the manager’s liking.

Tottenham brought in 10 first-team players this summer, and spent £313million, which resulted in the club having the highest net spend in the Premier League.

Villa’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a consultancy business advising elite clubs – believes that the money that Spurs have spent this summer should protect De Zerbi for the time being.

Many of Tottenham’s key signings only came through the door in the late stages of the window, including Savio, Omar Marmoush and Mykhaylo Mudryk.

Therefore, speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained that De Zerbi should have enough time to get the best out of his players.

He said: “I don't think we're going to be talking about De Zerbi having a problem. 

“I think this (investment) is going to protect him enough to give him enough time to get this squad working. So, he might be okay.”

Pre-international break games key for Tottenham 

Before the three-week-long international break, Tottenham need points and wins on the board.

Between now and then they have four matches in all competitions, all of which are winnable.

A trip to Nottingham Forest is first up this weekend, before they host Everton on 12 September.

Spurs will then travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on 15 September, before returning to North London to host Aston Villa on 19 September.

De Zerbi has to at least look at getting six points from these fixtures, with progression in the cup being a potential bonus.

If not the manager will have a massive task after the international break, with supporters likely to get restless.
