Pedro Porro tipped for new Tottenham role by ex-Spurs scout

Pedro Porro should be Tottenham Hotspur's next captain when Cristian Romero completes his move away from the club.

That is the opinion of former senior Tottenham scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

The 26-year-old recently extended his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, committing his future until 2031 amid reported interest from Manchester City.

Tottenham will have been glad to get that agreement over the line before the World Cup, with Porro playing a starring role for Spain and scoring against France in the semi-final.

Sunday's final in New Jersey will see him face off against Romero and Argentina, after they came from behind to beat England 2-1 in Wednesday's semi-final.

Romero is set to leave Tottenham this summer amid reported interest from the likes of Inter Milan and Barcelona.

Bryan King hails Pedro Porro

Porro signed for Tottenham in 2023, joining from Sporting CP in a deal worth around £40million.

He has proven to always be a threat going forward in the time since, but rare moments of defensive misjudgement do seem to come hand in hand with that.

However, more than anything else, Porro has proven himself to be incredibly reliable and persistent, always giving his all for a club in serious turmoil over the past two campaigns.

"Who's going to captain the football club? I think [Micky] van de Ven would be a choice. I'm not sure about [James] Maddison," King told Football Insider.

"[Conor] Gallagher, you've got this new boy who's come in from Brighton, the centre-half [Jan Paul van Hecke], all strong characters.

"Certainly not [Dominic] Solanke, Richarlison or [Mathys] Tel. You know, the boy Porro, he's one who always has pride in playing for the football club.

"I'd look at him because he's got great enthusiasm. I think he showed his leader qualities before at Tottenham. And certainly, his performances for Spain have been excellent."

What Roberto De Zerbi has said about Porro

Selecting Tottenham's new captain will be among Roberto De Zerbi's first big internal decisions.

Van de Ven wore the armband for every one of the final six Premier Leagues after Romero was injured, but it remains to be seen whether he is given it permanently.

Porro would seem a natural choice. "Pedro is a very important player for us, who has consistently shown his ability to influence matches in both defensive and attacking situations," said De Zerbi after the Spaniard's new deal.

"As well as his technical quality, I also love his mentality. Every day he wants to work, to learn and to improve, and these are the characteristics that help players reach the highest level."
