Roberto De Zerbi 'big fan' of Cody Gakpo as Liverpool ready to accept 'big offer'
Tottenham Hotspur have been backed to step up their interest in signing Liverpool star Cody Gakpo in the summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old is currently at the World Cup with the Netherlands but has been subject to speculation about his future at Anfield as Liverpool accelerate their plans.
Andoni Iraola's side officially announced earlier this week that they have agreed a deal to sign Osasuna forward Victor Munoz, who could push Gakpo down the pecking order.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Liverpool's signing of Munoz could boost Spurs' chances of landing Gakpo.
Roberto De Zerbi has enjoyed a strong start to the summer transfer window and is now eyeing a fourth permanent signing with ambitious plans in place.
While Spurs are eyeing a number of targets to play out wide ahead of the new season, Gakpo's Premier League experience has placed him firmly on their radar.
Could Tottenham make a move to sign Cody Gakpo?
Football Insider revealed in February that Liverpool are reluctant to let Gakpo leave and will only do so if they already have a replacement lined up.
Following the arrival of Munoz at Anfield, they could open the door for the forward to move on, with Spurs keeping a close eye on his situation in case he becomes available.
While there are a number of wide players on De Zerbi's radar this summer, Gakpo is seen as an ambitious target and Spurs have been given hope in their pursuit.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Gakpo had a disappointing season last year. A lot will depend on what Liverpool do in the transfer market as well.
"They've done a deal for Victor Munoz, so that will increase competition for places in Gakpo’s preferred left-side position.
"I don't think Liverpool are actively looking to sell Gakpo, but if a big offer did come in for him, it's something they might consider. They could use it to bolster their squad elsewhere.
"Tottenham are interested and I believe Roberto De Zerbi is a big fan of the Dutchman, but they do have other options as well for that left-sided winger position."
How do Liverpool feel about selling Gakpo?
Liverpool have been reluctant to lose Gakpo this summer given the key role he has played in their squad in recent seasons, but that could be set to change.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in March that Liverpool are hopeful of keeping Gakpo at the club after Mohamed Salah's departure.
Losing one winger has forced the Anfield club to enter the transfer market in pursuit of a replacement, so losing another in Gakpo would force them to make a new move.
Munoz's arrival could hint at Gakpo being allowed to leave given his preference to play on the left, rather than on the right where the gap has been left by Salah.
With Liverpool also targeting other wingers, the Netherlands international's future may depend on whether they are able to get deals over the line.
