Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are battling at the front of the queue to sign wantaway Tottenham star Lucas Bergvall, sources have told Football Insider.

Bergvall is pushing to leave Tottenham after becoming disillusioned with his potential role heading into next season.

Spurs have moved to sign Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes to bolster their midfield options, with confirmation of the former's move expected this week.

Bergvall struggled for game time under Roberto De Zerbi towards the end of the last campaign, and is set to fall down the pecking order in the middle of the park.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Forest and Villa remain at the front of the race to sign the Swedish starlet this summer.

Tottenham have insisted that he is not for sale, but could be forced to accept an offer for his services if he forces a move away.

Lucas Bergvall could join either Nottingham Forest or Aston Villa this summer

The 20-year-old registered five goal contributions in 33 appearances last term, but featured for just 10 minutes across Spurs' vital final four games of the campaign.

His contract still runs until 2031, so either Forest or Villa will be forced to spend big to snap him up this summer.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "I'm sure Tottenham don't want to keep a player who is unhappy and has indicated that he is interested in a move away.

"Nottingham Forest have shown a bit of interest in him as a potential replacement for Elliot Anderson, and Aston Villa are long-term admirers of Bergvall as well."

Celtic told Tottenham will accept £6m Alfie Devine offer as 'hijack' on the cards

Tottenham to let Alfie Devine leave as Celtic weigh up offer

Several midfielders are heading for the exit door in North London this summer, with Devine another looking likely to leave.

The playmaker registered eight goals and seven assists in 48 games on loan at Preston last season, and numerous clubs are keen on his services again this summer.

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Spurs will sell Devine for £6million as Celtic line up a move in the coming weeks.

Martin O'Neill has been scouting Devine for several months, but Preston and Wolves are also keen on a permanent move.
