Stefan Borson drops '£150m' Tottenham claim amid transfer transformation
The Lewis family are attempting to match the Premier League's biggest spenders in a new financial twist at Tottenham Hotspur.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Tottenham have underspent for far too long.
Daniel Levy was often criticised for his lack of investment on the pitch, rather focusing all of his attention on the off-pitch details, such as the iconic stadium.
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium continues to produce impressive numbers, providing a platform for success, but he remains a controversial figure.
Since the summer transfer window opened, however, the Lewis family have splashed the cash on Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali.
These moves have taken the rest of the Premier League by surprise, with Roberto De Zerbi being seriously backed ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Tottenham have been '£150m' behind in player wages
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson believes that the Lilywhites have made huge strides towards matching the likes of Man City and Liverpool in terms of wages.
"For last season, I would think [Man] City is probably £460 million, Liverpool is probably £450m, Arsenal is probably £400m," he said.
"Whereas Spurs' historic run rate has probably been £100m, £125m, £150m lower. That's a massive difference.
"It's very, very hard to compete with such a big difference, and I think Spurs probably overdid it for too long.
"I think maybe he [Levy] was booted out, effectively, by the Lewis family. They were ultimately tired of waiting for a bit more of an aggressive approach.
"The really questionable thing is how is it all being funded now?"
Who else could Roberto De Zerbi sign this summer?
De Zerbi is unlikely to stop there when it comes to summer additions, but there will have to be several outgoings to make room in the squad.
Radu Dragusin is on his way to Fiorentina, and with both Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray linked with exits, there is plenty of money to be made.
Spurs could add yet another figure to the midfield in the shape of Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, though the attack needs addressing far more.
RB Leipzig's Antonio Nusa or Bournemouth gem Eli Kroupi Junior could be incredible additions, with Savinho of Man City expected to join at some point.
It is an incredibly exciting summer window for the fans, but it definitely sparks questions of where all this money is coming from.
