Stefan Borson drops verdict on Tottenham buying 'more £100m players'

Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to spend mega sums on signings next summer without Champions League football.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the 2026-27 campaign could already make-or-break the club's transfers.

Roberto De Zerbi invested heavily ahead of this season, signing Sandro Tonali, Savio, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke, as well as several loanee deals.

Spurs' start to the campaign has been far from ideal, though, sitting bottom of the Premier League table after five matches.

Borson has already discussed the calamitous fallout that could be caused by missing out on Champions League football, but fans still want more signings.

Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White and Brian Brobbey of Sunderland have both been linked, and either would cost a fortune.

Tottenham to 'restrain themselves' after summer spending

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson believes the future looks bleak at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, especially without European qualification.

"Are Tottenham really going to have another big summer next summer? I think that's pretty unlikely, to be honest," he said.

"And certainly if they didn't get Champions League, which looks extremely unlikely, in the absence of Champions League football, I think they're going to have to restrain themselves next summer.

"I'm not saying they won't do anything, but are they really going to buy more £100m players? How many people can afford a £100m player?"

The Lilywhites spent upwards of £300m on transfers, but the same is unlikely to happen in North London until the team becomes successful.

De Zerbi cannot blame a lack of signings for his team's struggles this season, that's for sure, after spending an eye-watering amount of money.

He is, however, currently one of the favourites to be the first Premier League manager sacked this season, given the current situation.

Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler is already heavily linked with the job, though Manchester United are also believed to be eyeing the manager as well.

Unless Spurs can turn around their current form, De Zerbi is unlikely to be in charge when the transfer window next opens in North London.
