Stefan Borson hits out at Tottenham's 'obsession with events'

Published on:

Tottenham Hotspur are focusing too heavily on non-footballing events as Roberto De Zerbi's team continues to struggle.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Spurs' "perceived financial strength" is being overly spoken about.

This comes after Tottenham Hotspur Stadium's most recent hosting of an NFL fixture between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Philadelphia Eagles.

It has been suggested that this game along could have brought in upwards of £6million in revenue, but Borson has heavily debated this, stating that it's likely much closer to £1m.

Understandably, fans are excited by the idea of revenue-generating events in North London, but it simply serving as a distraction from the team right now.

De Zerbi's side are currently sitting 19th in the Premier League table, with three points after six games, and relegation is once again a talking point for the Lilywhites.

Tottenham have 'more important things' to worry about

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson has stated that "getting back into Europe" and being successful on the pitch is far more important than money-making non-footballing events.

"I think it's a rounding error overall in perceiving Spurs' financial strength. I don't think it's the core," he began to explain.

"The core is about getting back into Europe, about getting up the league table so that you're getting merit awards that are closer to what they were two or three years ago.

"Those are the most important things, rather than this obsession with events, which is more about the management team maximising its infrastructure as opposed to anything that's going to move the dial for the football club.

"Compare that to European Football, Champions League, and £3million a place in the Premier League."

Is Roberto De Zerbi at risk?

Despite Spurs only being six games into the new season, the pressure is well and truly on, having only just escaped relegation last term.

The bookies seem to believe that he and Manchester United's Michael Carrick are two of the favourites to be sacked next, alongside Fulham's Alvaro Arbeloa.

And speaking to Football Insider, Mick Brown said that Spurs' lack of goalscoring power will ultimately be what gets him sacked in North London.

It seems far too early to tell what his future holds at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but his compensation packet is unlikely to be a problem, that's for sure.
