Tottenham 'getting the best deal possible' for Lucas Bergvall as Sunderland deal agreed
Tottenham Hotspur are getting the best deal possible for Lucas Bergvall after Sunderland agreed a fee for the midfielder.
The 20-year-old was at the centre of a multi-club transfer race, with Spurs aiming to boost his price tag as Nottingham Forest and Newcastle battled it out for his signature.
However, sources say that Sunderland have now come in with an offer to beat both of their rivals to the punch, and are closing in on a full agreement to lure him to the Stadium of Light.
Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Spurs' aim has been to make the biggest fee possible through Bergvall's sale to continue spending big money.
Roberto De Zerbi's side had been playing Newcastle and Nottingham Forest against each other to bolster his price, and were waitin for "an offer they could not refuse".
Sunderland have now come in with that offer and are closing in on a full agreement, with all clubs and the player happy with a move to the Stadium of Light.
What was Tottenham's plan for Lucas Bergvall?
Brown told Football Insider on 21 July that the bidding war for Bergvall was playing right into Tottenham's hands, and that has been proven right after a deal was agreed.
Spurs have already spent big money on improving their squad this summer, and Bergvall's sale will allow for further spending as part of their squad overhaul.
The Sweden international made clear his desire to leave North London earlier this summer, and is now set to get his wish, with Tottenham happy to do a deal.
"The main thing for Tottenham has always been to raise money from the sale," Brown told Football Insider.
"They're getting the best deal possible, whichever club he ends up going to, and will not sell him for a low price now that they know clubs are ready to make big offers.
"Tottenham want an offer they cannot refuse, because they know at some point they will have to sell Bergvall, it's just about how much money they can raise.
"They've already spent a lot on their squad, and now they have to make a decision about whether this level of spending can continue.
"If they can sell players like Bergvall for big money, then that will allow them to keep spending, so the more money they make, the better for Tottenham.
"Plus, it will mean Bergvall gets what he wants, because he's been clear that he would like to leave Tottenham in the near future."
How important will Bergvall's signing be for Sunderland?
Sunderland have moved quickly to bring Bergvall to the Stadium of Light as part of their attempts to further bolster Regis Le Bris' side ahead of the start of the new season.
Alongside having established themselved in the Premier League, the Black Cats also qualified for the Europa League, and are prepared to spend big money to land their top targets.
Landing Bergvall also has the added impact of dealing a blow to their rivals, after Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle missing out on top targets is becoming a major concern.
Eddie Howe's side have been beaten to the sigings of Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi by Liverpool and Aston Villa respectively, with Bergvall next on the list.
