Tottenham questioned on 'financial irregularities' as 'hypocrites' lambasted after Man City verdict
Tottenham Hotspur's finances should be looked into more closely following the verdict in the Manchester City case.
That is the opinion of former senior Tottenham scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
After it emerged last week, an independent commission's official verdict was released on Tuesday and saw the Citizens found guilty of 114 breaches of the Premier League's financial rules.
Man City intend to appeal and maintain their innocence, but the decision was damning and found that officials reduced their costs by more than £900million through 'sham' payments.
A sanction hearing will now begin in the coming days, with a punishment set to come into effect imminently.
It remains unclear exactly how Man City will be punished, but many expect such severe breaches to be made an example of by the Premier League.
Tottenham are in 'massive debt'
Not only did Man City inflate their revenue, they have also been found guilty of failing to co-operate with the Premier League's investigations.
Yet not everybody believes that the Citizens have acted so differently to the Premier League's other major clubs.
"Man City brought in the right players. Financially, whatever went on. The fact is, you can buy a player for £50m and somebody else will say, 'we couldn't afford him,'" King told Football Insider.
"'He wouldn't come to us because we couldn't afford him.' But there's no guarantee that that player is going to perform. You've seen it in the past.
"Players have been brought in. Just look at a few of them now. They've been brought in for big money. If anybody had said about financial irregularities, you'd have said, 'well, what about Tottenham?'
"They're in massive debt with the new stadium. What gives them the right to be able to bring in players and spend £400m when they haven't even paid off the stadium yet?
"There are so many hypocrites in the game at the moment. Nobody's interested in losers anymore. They're interested in winners."
Why can Tottenham continue to spend?
For fans of Newcastle United and Aston Villa especially, it has been frustrating to see Tottenham spend at will after finishing 17th for a second consecutive season, all while they struggle against the restrictions.
But while it remains a source of debt, the stadium is a large reason why the Lilywhites are so free to continue spending.
The North London club's revenue streams have increased massively since the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was built, with concerts and events being held there while matchday revenue has soared.
The system's rules may not be totally fair, but Tottenham are currently operating within them.
