Tottenham ready to trigger release clause after 'springing surprise'
Tottenham will exercise Mykhailo Mudryk's hefty buy clause if he performs to the standard they expect this season, sources have told Football Insider.
The North London club sprung a surprise by signing Mudryk on loan from rivals Chelsea ahead of the summer deadline.
Spurs mainly explored the move on the recommendation of Roberto De Zerbi, after they previously worked together closely at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Chelsea included a huge £75million option-to-buy the Ukrainian winger in an effort to potentially recoup the initial £62m they spent to sign him in January 2023.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Spurs have not ruled out triggering that clause if he shines this season.
The 25-year-old has not played in a competitive game since he was banned for doping back in November 2024.
Tottenham could buy Mykhailo Mudryk if he shines
Mudryk impressed for Chelsea directly before his ban, as he registered three goals and four assists in 15 appearances at the start of 2024-25.
De Zerbi has backed him to succeed at Tottenham this season as he battles for regular minutes on the left wing.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "It's hard to judge Mudryk right now, because he has been out of football for two years. It will take him a while to get up to speed, but if he does well and Tottenham do well with Mudryk in the team performing and producing, then there is a possibility that he could join on a permanent basis.
"The option is there, but there is a hefty price tag on his head, so let's wait and see. A lot will depend on the player and a lot will depend on how Tottenham do as well."
Richarlison could still leave Tottenham soon
Mudryk has effectively taken Richarlison's spot in Spurs' Premier League squad following his arrival in the last week.
The Brazilian striker has been left out by De Zerbi after he entered talks to join Everton but ultimately failed to seal an exit from the North London club.
He then agreed personal terms with Trabzonspor but did not seal a move before the Turkish window closed on Friday
Sources have revealed to Football Insider that Saudi Pro League clubs are set to approach Richarlison over a move before their own window closes next month, so he could still leave in the coming weeks.
