Tottenham set sights on Neco Williams with 'late' deal on the cards

Tottenham Hotspur could reignite their interest in Nottingham Forest star Neco Williams in the closing stages of the transfer window.

The 25-year-old was a target for Spurs earlier this summer, but they opted to target other positions in their squad, and they could now return with weeks left of the window.

Following the sale of Djed Spence to Inter Milan, Roberto De Zerbi is keen to strengthen at full-back, and the Nottingham Forest star is seen as the ideal replacement.

Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Williams is very highly regarded at Spurs and a deal could be agreed as they accelerate their transfer plans.

The Wales international's ability to play on both sides of the defence would make him the ideal replacement for Spence, and scouts have been impressed by his displays.

Nottingham Forest have been reluctant to lose key players in the wake of Elliot Anderson's move to Man City, but there is a feeling they could be persuaded by the right offer.

Could Tottenham make a move for Neco Williams?

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider last month that Williams would be keen on a move to Tottenham and Forest will have to fight to keep hold of him.

Spurs' interest has been long-standing, and while it did not advance earlier in the summer window, there is a growing feeling that they could make a late move.

After what has been a busy transfer window in North London, De Zerbi is set to make the finishing touches to his squad, with Williams among their late targets.

"Neco Williams is a player who is very highly thought of at Tottenham," Brown told Football Insider.

"He's a very good player with a lot of experience in the Premier League, and he has proved during his time at Nottingham Forest that he can play at the highest level.

"Those performances have impressed a number of clubs, so if Spurs are looking to sign a new full-back, he will be high on their list of options.

"The talk is that they want somebody to come in and replace Spence, and when you look at his qualities, Williams would stand out as the ideal replacement.

"Whether or not Nottingham Forest would be willing to sell is a different question, but Tottenham have spent a lot of money this summer, and they could look to tempt Forest late on."

How do Nottingham Forest feel about selling Williams?

Tottenham's late interest in Williams could depend on how open Nottingham Forest are to letting him go, given his importance in Oliver Glasner's side.

The Wales international has been one of their most valued players over the last couple of seasons, and while that has generated interest, it means they are reluctant to sell.

Instead, Football Insider revealed last month that Nottingham Forest are planning to hold contract talks with Williams to secure his long-term future at the club.

Williams signed a contract extension last summer, with his current deal set to run until 2029, meaning the club are under no pressure to sell despite the growing interest.

Following the arrival of Glasner, who is determined to keep his best players at Nottingham Forest this summer, they have no plans to let the full-back move on.
