Tottenham set sights on signing Crystal Palace star after Dominic Solanke decision
Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move to sign Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta amid concerns about their attacking options.
The 29-year-old has enjoyed an outstanding couple of seasons, helping Palace to win the FA Cup and Conference League, and earning a place in France's World Cup squad.
Those performances have attracted interest from a number of Premier League rivals, who have been put on alert by his contract situation.
Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Spurs are one of the clubs interested in Mateta as they view him as an upgrade on Dominic Solanke.
The striker has just one year remaining on his deal at Selhurst Park and has turned down a number of new offers, leading to a belief he could be available for a discounted fee.
Crystal Palace are reluctant to lose Mateta regardless of his contract situation, but should Spurs come in with a significant offer, they may find it hard to turn down.
Could Tottenham make a move for Jean-Philippe Mateta?
Football Insider revealed back in January that Tottenham were plotting a move to sign Mateta in the late stages of the mid-season window, and that interest has lingered.
The France international came close to joining AC Milan before he failed a medical, and is believed to be keen to explore his options, although he is not forcing a move.
Roberto De Zerbi's side could now be prepared to reignite their interest, with their focus turning towards strengthening up front in the closing stages of the window.
"Tottenham have been wanting to sign a striker this summer," Brown told Football Insider.
"I think it's clear at this point that they're not entirely happy when you look at their current options. Are Dominic Solanke and Richarlison enough? They don't think so.
"So when you're looking at which top-class strikers might be available, and already have that Premier League experience, you need look no further than Jean-Philippe Mateta.
"That contract situation is still a factor, and Spurs will believe they can get him on the cheap, even if Palace are reluctant to let him go.
"He's proven he can score goals at the top level and he would certainly be an upgrade on what Tottenham have already got, plus, he's somebody who has been on their radar before.
"If they can make a suitable offer, they could be prepared to test Palace's resolve and see how much money they are willing to pass up on."
How do Crystal Palace feel about losing Mateta?
Crystal Palace have been clear in their stance this summer that Mateta will not be sold for a discounted price, as he remains a key part of their ambitions for the season.
Pierre Sage will lead his side into their first-ever Europa League campaign, after the striker's winning goal saw them lift European silverware last time out.
As a result, Brown told Football Insider on 6 August that Mateta is "most likely" to stay at Crystal Palace this summer as the club have no plans to see him leave.
Palace are prepared to let the striker consider his options and walk away on a free next year, in exchange for another season of him leading the line at Selhurst Park.
Tottenham and other interested parties could be set to test that resolve, however, with activity expected to hot up in the closing stages of the transfer window.
