Tottenham turn attention to signing two 'serial trophy winners'

Roberto De Zerbi is hoping to change the mentality at Tottenham Hotspur by signing trophy-winning players.

That is the opinion of former senior Tottenham scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

The Lilywhites have already spent well over £200million this summer, including moves for Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

Tottenham hope next to complete a move for Manchester City winger Savinho, while a move for Liverpool's Cody Gakpo is also eyed.

De Zerbi is under contract until 2031 in North London and has been tasked with transforming a team with consecutive 17th-placed finishes in the Premier League.

The Italian has been backed to oversee a complete overhaul of his squad this summer, with pressure high ahead of the new season.

As much as Tottenham may hate to admit it, many lessons can be taken from Mikel Arteta's rebuild at Arsenal.

The Spaniard was initially eager to clear out the deadwood and replace them with younger players, but the focus shifted once the Gunners were in contention.

The arrivals of Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and within the last year, Viktor Gyokeres and Piero Hincapie, were part of a directive to add winners to the squad ahead of their first Premier League title last season.

"I think what he seems to be trying to bring into the club is players that have been classed as winners, you know? He's got [Pedro] Porro, who's won the World Cup," King told Football Insider.

"He's got [Cristian] Romero there, who's won the World Cup. He's got players coming in now who have won trophies and is that going to help turn the players that are already there to get them into a winning mentality?"

Tottenham attitude must change under De Zerbi

New players can be brought in, but it will take more than that to change the overall mentality at Tottenham.

The North London club have been plagued by feelings of disappointment and failure for decades, but hope to see a new era unfold under De Zerbi.

"I think we are building a very good team, with some very important new players, and we are starting the project in another part of the history of the club," De Zerbi said last month.

Further new arrivals are set to arrive in the coming weeks, with what looks to finally be a positive future developing at Tottenham.
