Tottenham's new Lucas Bergvall transfer plan revealed after U-turn
Tottenham are keen to wait and encourage more clubs to enter the race for Lucas Bergvall before potentially selling him to the highest bidder, sources have told Football Insider.
Bergvall has indicated his desire to leave Spurs this summer as he anticipates a fall down Roberto De Zerbi's midfield pecking order.
Spurs have let it be known they do not want to sell the 20-year-old, but sources say that circumstances have changed in recent days.
Mateus Fernandes joined from West Ham last week, while they confirmed on Monday morning that Sandro Tonali has arrived for a club-record fee from Newcastle.
Bergvall already found it tough to earn regular minutes with less competition towards the end of last season, so an exit looks to be on the cards.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Spurs will sanction his exit to the club that offers the highest bid as several top European clubs line up a move for the Swede.
Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are already known to be keen on his services as they each look to bolster their midfield options
Lucas Bergvall to leave Spurs for top bidder as big clubs circle
Recent reports have stated that Forest were the unnamed English club behind a £43million bid for Bergvall that was duly rejected by Tottenham.
He has no shortage of suitors across Europe, with Spurs willing to sell as they look to recoup some of the reported £185m spent on Fernandes and Tonali.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Spurs are going to have to balance the books, so selling somebody like Bergvall, who they'll make a big profit on having signed him from Sweden, I think could be smart business.
"I think there'll be a lot of competition in Europe for Bergvall as well, so look, Spurs will be hoping there's a bit of an auction for him and they can get the biggest price possible for the Swedish midfielder."
James Maddison could leave Tottenham as Aston Villa circle
Maddison could be another Spurs midfielder set to leave this summer as De Zerbi orders a major shake up of his squad.
The 29-year-old only recovered from a serious ligament injury to play three games at the end of last season as they successfully avoided relegation.
Sources have revealed to Football Insider that Aston Villa are keen on signing Maddison this summer, as well as Bergvall.
De Zerbi is not pushing him out of the club, as he values his experience and quality, but the playmaker could also force an exit if he feels like game time will be at a premium.
