Inter Milan are now odds-on favourites to secure Cristian Romero’s signature this summer as the Tottenham Hotspur captain edges closer to an exit.

On Monday, Inter Milan sporting director Piero Ausilio confirmed that the two clubs had entered talks over a potential summer move.

The 28-year-old centre-back has been heavily linked with an exit for months after a dreadful 2025-26 campaign, which almost saw Spurs relegated.

Now, one UK bookmaker believes it is highly likely that he will join Inter Milan this summer, slashing the odds of a move down to 8/15.

Romero played 23 Premier League matches for Tottenham last season in the Premier League, but picked up two red cards in this time.

The defender is yet to return to the North London club for preseason after reaching the World Cup final with Argentina.

Piero Ausilio: Inter are trying to sign Cristian Romero

Despite two difficult seasons at Tottenham, Romero is still seen as a top defender in the footballing world.

The centre-back’s stock no doubt rose after his performances in the 2026 World Cup, where he impressed for Argentina.

Now, Ausilio has made it clear that Inter Milan are looking to sign Romero ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

He told Sky Italia via The Standard: “It’s definitely a deal we are trying to sign with the player and the club (Tottenham).

“These things take some time but there’s definitely interest. Let’s see.

“We are interested in signing Cuti Romero. We have met his agent and we have already talked with Tottenham. Let's see what happens.”

Cristian Romero: 'Clear front-runners' emerge in race to sign Tottenham star

Who else could sign Romero this summer?

Despite Inter being the clear frontrunners, there are plenty of other clubs still in the race for Romero’s signature this summer transfer window.

Barcelona are currently seen as the second favourites at 9/2 as they aim to finally claim the Champions League once more this season.

Atletico Madrid are also in the mix at 6/1, while Real Madrid are considered outsiders at 12/1.

A shock move to Manchester United is considered possible but nonetheless a long shot at 18/1, in what would be a surprise move to a Premier League rival.

Nevertheless, it seems highly likely that Romero has played his last game for Tottenham, with Roberto De Zerbi looking to build his own team ahead of the new campaign.

However, it remains to be seen who the centre-back will be playing for during the 2026-27 campaign, with plenty of twists and turns expected over the coming weeks in the transfer window.
