Johan Lange is sealing his Tottenham exit with £70m+ Jan Paul van Hecke deal

Johan Lange may be about to put the final nail in his own coffin at Tottenham Hotspur in the coming days.

The Lilywhites' sporting director has been under huge pressure in recent months amid the club's dismal campaign, as they only narrowly avoided relegation on the final day.

Several of Lange's signings didn't pay off, with the headline arrival Xavi Simons returning just two league goals for his £52million fee.

The likes of Randal Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel also struggled to make a telling impact in North London, and that has left fans looking for answers.

Lange has been in the firing line before, but perhaps never more so than after the club limped to their second successive 17th-placed finish.

The transfer chief now has his eyes fixed firmly on Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, but it is already clear that the deal is an accident waiting to happen.

Tottenham are crazy if they pay £70m+ for Jan Paul van Hecke

Van Hecke has already emerged as one of Tottenham's biggest targets for the summer window, but they simply must proceed with caution in the coming weeks.

TalkSPORT recently confirmed that the Lilywhites have already had two offers rejected by Brighton, but are not expected to be deterred in their pursuit.

The second of those offers already hit the £70m mark, and it is clear that the Seagulls are looking for an even bigger fee if they are to sell up.

However, that is where Tottenham must think very carefully about what they are about to pay for, given Van Hecke's lack of experience.

The 26-year-old has never played Champions League football before, and is about to enter the final year of his contract at the Amex Stadium.

Frankly, for Spurs to shell out over £70m on a player who is likely to be available for free just one year down the line would be shocking business, especially given he is not a player who would be guaranteed to improve them.

Tottenham need shrewd, value-for-money business if they are to improve next term, and this deal would be the complete opposite of that.

With Lange already under major scrutiny, a move for Van Hecke could effectively seal his exit when it inevitably proves to be poor spending.

Van Hecke pursuit means inevitable Cristian Romero exit

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Tottenham "expect" Cristian Romero to move on this summer.

The Argentine cuts a controversial figure in North London, as he is never too far from a needless suspension at any stage of a campaign.

Brown suggested that Tottenham feel it is the right time for the 28-year-old to move on after their relegation scare, and they have had their eyes on Van Hecke for several years as a long-term replacement.

However it is surely not prudent for them to move for the Dutchman at all costs this summer.

They could get centre-backs of far greater experience for a fee in excess of £70m, and if they truly have that level of money to spend, then they should be looking elsewhere.
