Lucas Bergvall valuation boosted as new Tottenham contract length shared: 'The difference will be...'

Tottenham Hotspur could now sell Lucas Bergvall for up to the £80million mark in the coming years after his new contract.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the midfielder's new deal makes perfect business sense for the Lilywhites.

The 20-year-old's latest agreement comes just two months after he told the North London outfit that he wanted to leave the club this summer.

Wyness believes that Spurs have almost doubled Bergvall's value with the new deal, after they rejected a £46m bid for him from Newcastle in the summer window.

Roberto De Zerbi has always maintained that he still sees the Sweden international as a key part of his future plans, and harmony now appears to have been restored.

Bergvall was already under contract with Tottenham until the summer of 2031, and his latest extension has now pushed that date even further back.

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Bergvall's new contract is likely to have been a two-year extension.

The official length of the deal remains undisclosed at the moment, but the Scottish businessman expects the starlet to now be committed to Spurs for the next seven years, a further two on top of his previous 2031 agreement.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness made it clear that Spurs will now be able to hold out for much more money if he leaves in the coming years.

"It's good from Spurs' point of view, because look, he's still a very young guy, and they're going to have him now for probably seven years," he said.

"So the difference will be, if there is going to be a move, it'll mean that Spurs will be getting somewhere up to £80m as opposed to £40m with a shorter term contract. 

"I think it just makes sense to tie him down, and they've obviously been able to reach an agreement."

Bergvall played the full match as Tottenham lost 3-1 to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night but has just appeared for just 72 Premier League minutes this season.

Tottenham could pay Roberto De Zerbi 'settlement'

Former Tottenham scout Bryan King recently told Football Insider that Tottenham likely have a "settlement" clause in De Zerbi's contract for if they decide to sack him.

That would provide the Lilywhites with a way to avoid paying the full compensation for the remaining five years on his contract.

De Zerbi's dismissal is not on the radar in North London at the moment, but King has warned that he is likely to be gone within the next 12 months if the club's fortunes don't improve.

Spurs remain winless after their opening four Premier League games, and are also still without a goal in league action.
