Sources: Tottenham 'adamant' over Mauro Icardi transfer plan
Tottenham Hotspur are adamant that they will not pursue a move to sign free-agent striker Mauro Icardi, sources have told Football Insider.
Recent reports in Italy have suggested that the Lilywhites are interested in the 33-year-old's services, but in reality, he is not viewed as a "viable option" for them right now.
Instead, Icardi's "most likely" destination at the moment is Serie A, where Lazio are one of several clubs that are keen to strike a deal to bring him in.
Crucially, Tottenham would be unable to register the Argentine until January, having already submitted their 25-man squad for the Premier League.
Roberto De Zerbi's side have scored just two league goals from their opening five games, but the board believe that they have "enough" attacking options to turn a corner.
They spent big to sign Savinho from Manchester City in the summer, and also have a conditional obligation to buy loanee Omar Marmoush for £60million.
Mauro Icardi out of reach for Tottenham
Tottenham's issues in attack so far this season have prompted questions as to how their options could be improved at the top end of the pitch.
The free agent market is the only option for clubs outside the transfer window, and Icardi is undoubtedly the standout selection at the moment.
The veteran netted 16 goals in all competitions for Galatasaray last season, but ultimately opted to depart the Turkish giants after four years in their colours.
Icardi is vastly experienced at the top level of European football, and even has over 120 goals to his name in Serie A, alongside 11 in the Champions League.
The pedigree behind the former PSG and Inter Milan man is in no doubt, but Spurs have quickly been put off by their registration situation.
Do Tottenham have more money to spend in January?
Former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson told Football Insider last weekend that Tottenham are likely to spend heavily once again in January, after a spend in excess of £300m this summer.
The Lewis family recently provided a fresh cash injection of £120m into the club, which the football finance expert is most likely to go towards the everyday operation.
However, Borson believes that the ownership still intend to continue splashing the cash until the squad is at a level that "guarantees" them Champions League football.
That feels a long way away for De Zerbi's men at the moment, as they sit bottom of the Premier League at the first international break.
