Sources: Tottenham's chances of signing Sandro Tonali revealed after Mateus Fernandes agreement
Tottenham Hotspur are still hoping to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali as well as Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, sources have told Football Insider.
The Lilywhites are aware that it will be "difficult" to seal moves for both of the midfield duo, but Roberto De Zerbi is pushing to make it a reality.
Sources say the Italian boss is trying to build an "exciting project" in North London, and the club are "hopeful" that they will land both stars.
Tottenham have an agreement in place for Fernandes to join for £85million, while they are continuing to test Newcastle's resolve for Tonali.
However, there are likely to be financial implications for Spurs, who may have to sell players as a result.
De Zerbi is determined to avoid another relegation battle next term, and his club have been one of the busiest in the summer market so far.
Tottenham eyeing huge midfield revamp
The centre of midfield provided a major area of concern for Tottenham last season, but it now looks set to become a completely different unit next term.
Joao Palhinha was allowed to leave the club at the end of his loan spell, while Lucas Bergvall is also pushing for an exit ahead of next term.
De Zerbi is now trying to strike a partnership between Fernandes and Tonali, who were both hugely impressive performers throughout last season.
Spurs have already moved to secure four new signings this summer, and successful moves for both Fernandes and Tonali would take their summer spending to well over the £200m mark.
The club hierarchy are willing to back De Zerbi to get the players that he needs, having placed full faith in him since his arrival at the end of March.
Nottingham Forest submit formal Lucas Bergvall offer
Football Insider revealed on Tuesday that Nottingham Forest have had a £43m bid rejected for Bergvall.
The East Midlands outfit have identified the 20-year-old starlet as an ambitious target, but have seen their first concrete approach for him swiftly rejected.
Spurs are understood to be adamant that the Sweden international won't leave this summer, despite his desire to explore a new challenge.
Forest see Bergvall as a replacement for Elliot Anderson, and have money to burn after their £116m sale.
