Tottenham in jaw-dropping hunt for 6ft 2 title-chaser, traditional strategy scrapped - report

Tottenham could potentially scrap their traditional transfer policy of making late summer signings this year and make an early move for Ajax defender Matthjis de Ligt, according to a report.

Football.London claims that Spurs are eyeing up a jaw-dropping £50million swoop for de Ligt, 18, in the summer as a potential replacement for contract rebel Toby Alderweireld, who may be leaving North London.

It is understood that Arsenal and Barcelona are also interested in the five-times Netherlands international, who is currently helping second-placed Ajax chase the Eredivise title.

Mauricio Pochettino is said to have been frustrated with the way that Spurs have left their transfer business until the latter stages of transfer windows so will look to abolish that policy this year to fend of some of Europe’s top clubs to sign 6ft 2in de Ligt.

The teenager has made 33 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring three goals in the process.

De Ligt would be a fantastic signing for Tottenham but that £50million price-tag is very high and Daniel Levy may not be willing to pay it, unless that he is the fee he can pick up for Alderweireld. De Ligt will no doubt be in demand in the summer and Barca look as though they could trump the competition to sign the young Dutchman. Spurs have had a lot of success with products of Ajax’s academy over the years and having Davinson Sanchez come from their last year may help their chances of snapping up the highly-rated teen sensation.
